Jillian Michaels breaks down saturated fat and the new food pyramid"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Following last week\u2019s announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/trump-administration-unveil-new-dietary-guidelines-fda-plans-sweeping-2026-food-overhaul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updates to the food pyramid<\/a>, nutrition experts continue to weigh in on how the new recommendations could change Americans&#8217; eating habits.<\/p>\n<p>The new pyramid, which was announced by HHS officials on Jan. 7, puts a greater emphasis on red meat, such as beef, pork and lamb, as well as other protein-rich foods.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines call for more focus on &#8220;real food&#8221; and a move away from ultraprocessed foods, added sugar and refined carbs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-admins-new-nutrition-guidelines-target-ultra-processed-foods-ease-up-red-meat-saturated-fats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TRUMP ADMIN&#8217;S NEW NUTRITION GUIDELINES TARGET ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS, EASE UP ON RED MEAT AND SATURATED FATS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These guidelines return us to the basics,&#8221; Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said during the announcement. &#8220;American households must prioritize whole, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nutrient-dense foods<\/a> \u2014 protein, dairy, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats and whole grains \u2014 and dramatically reduce highly processed foods. This is how we Make America Healthy Again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Celebrity fitness trainer Jillian Michaels, who recently released her new Fox Nation special, <a href=\"https:\/\/nation.foxnews.com\/featured\/?cmpid=org=NAT::ag=owned::mc=referral::src=FNC_web::cmp=Boiler::add=DigitalBoilerUnit_&amp;utm_source=referral&amp;utm_medium=FNC_web&amp;utm_campaign=Boiler&amp;utm_content=DigitalBoilerUnit_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><u>&#8220;Toxic: America\u2019s Food Crisis,&#8221;<\/u><\/a> spoke with Fox News Digital about her support of the updated recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The food pyramid has been effectively inverted. This is wonderful. This is long overdue,&#8221; she said during an on-camera interview.<\/p>\n<p>The food pyramid guides &#8220;hundreds of billions of dollars&#8221; of tax money for things like public school lunches, food for the military and nutrition assistance programs like SNAP, according to Michaels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the reason that the food pyramid, prior to Kennedy inverting it, was recommending things like refined grains and sugary cereal \u2014 and famously, sugary cereal was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/healthy-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered healthier<\/a> than things like beef,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And at the same time, red meat and saturated fats were demonized.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/eating-meat-could-protect-against-cancer-related-death-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>EATING MEAT COULD PROTECT AGAINST CANCER-RELATED DEATH, STUDY SUGGESTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The red meat itself wasn\u2019t the problem, Michaels suggested \u2014 it was about the saturated fat in the red meat. &#8220;So now, the conversation comes down to: Is saturated fat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/healthy-living\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">good for you<\/a> or bad for you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The expert emphasized that saturated fat is &#8220;unquestionably better&#8221; than refined vegetable oils, due to the extraction process that exposes the oils to unhealthy chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>If there was a &#8220;continuum of fat,&#8221; ranging from good to bad, olive oil and omega-3 fatty acids would be at the top, due to their disease-fighting capabilities and their benefits for heart health and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/brain-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain health<\/a>, according to Michaels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Along this continuum, saturated fat is a little further down,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And then at the bottom, you have the refined oils.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is still some controversy about whether consuming large amounts of saturated fat is healthy, Michaels acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/how-much-red-meat-too-much-experts-weigh-food-pyramid-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HOW MUCH RED MEAT IS TOO MUCH? EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON FOOD PYRAMID UPDATES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One thing that hasn\u2019t changed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/diet-trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new guidelines<\/a> is the recommended maximum intake of saturated fat, which remains at 10% of total daily calories.<\/p>\n<p>That would mean in a 2,000-calorie-per-day diet, the saturated fat limit would be 200 calories, or around 22 grams of fat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You would be hard-pressed to find any M.D. or any Ph.D. in nutrition science who\u2019s going to warn you away from 200 calories a day of saturated fat,&#8221; Michaels said. &#8220;And is it better than the refined oils? 100%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The concerns come when you\u2019re eating huge amounts of saturated fats \u2014 let\u2019s say you\u2019re carnivore, you\u2019re keto, and your entire 2,000-calorie-a-day diet is all saturated fat.&#8221; In that case, Michaels recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/health-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talking to a doctor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Based on the recommendations of the existing food pyramid put out by Kennedy and his HHS, you\u2019re perfectly fine eating 200 calories of saturated fat from animal protein a day \u2014 and it is far better than the previous alternative,&#8221; she reiterated.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, however, the healthy level of saturated fat intake depends on the individual, Michaels said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has to do with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/heart-health\/cholesterol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">individual lipid profile<\/a>, and this is something that you can get to the bottom of with your doctor,&#8221; she advised.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE FOR MORE HEALTH STORIES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The expert pointed out that there are genetic tests that can calculate a calcium score, which can indicate whether someone has cholesterol deposits in the arteries.<\/p>\n<p>The new pyramid\u2019s focus on red meat and other proteins is warranted, according to Michaels, as she claims that Americans haven\u2019t been getting enough of it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were getting way too many refined grains and added sugars and not enough protein,&#8221; she cautioned. &#8220;This causes things like sarcopenia, osteopenia and osteoporosis, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/geriatric-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as we age<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So in a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet, getting more protein and more fiber is the best recommendation you can make.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond its protein and fat content, beef is also rich in other kinds of micronutrients, Michaels noted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Overall, she said, the most important takeaways of the new guidelines are to eat whole foods and to avoid overeating.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You don\u2019t need to get crazy with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/diet-trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fad diets<\/a>,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/red-meat-back-jillian-michaels-breaks-down-saturated-fat-new-food-pyramid\">Source &#8211; https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/red-meat-back-jillian-michaels-breaks-down-saturated-fat-new-food-pyramid <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following last week\u2019s announcement of updates to the food pyramid, nutrition experts continue to weigh in on how the new recommendations could change Americans&#8217; eating [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"twitter_2902945987_2902945987":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[16563],"tags":[],"stock_ticker":[],"class_list":["post-116999","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-market-news","entry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Is red meat back?
