Not only have losses on bonds been high but demand for loans has paled. Neither is Banco Bradesco able to increase borrowing costs, since state banks are intensely competing on this front.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, interest rates in Brazil are relatively higher and offer room for the non-risky credit offerings by Banco Bradesco. According to the bank\u2019s Chief Financial Officer Luiz Carlos Angelotti, the focus currently for the bank is to offer its customers only mortgages and any other type of loans that can be linked directly to the paycheck of the borrower. The bank expects to buffer its net interest margins with these \u2018classes of loans and mortgages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fundamental issues for the bank, says Angelotti is not limited to poor demand for loans but the high levels of competition that government banks bring to the banking sector. Since, Banco Bradesco is committed to only low-risk financial instruments, room for offering loan options or interest rates are limited, thereby driving down margins and bringing in additional pressure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The drop in value of the some of the bank\u2019s government bonds have led to fall in \u2018shareholder equity\u2019 and concerns about performance in the next few years.
