{"id":116285,"date":"2026-01-08T12:10:04","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T17:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/labor-dept-launches-multimillion-dollar-shipbuilding-training-plan-as-us-races-to-close-china-gap-116285"},"modified":"2026-01-08T12:10:04","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T17:10:04","slug":"labor-dept-launches-multimillion-dollar-shipbuilding-training-plan-as-us-races-to-close-china-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/labor-dept-launches-multimillion-dollar-shipbuilding-training-plan-as-us-races-to-close-china-gap-116285","title":{"rendered":"Labor Dept launches multimillion-dollar shipbuilding training plan as US races to close China gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>FIRST ON FOX: <\/strong>The Labor Department is distributing nearly $14 million to U.S. institutions as part of a new initiative to train American workers to enter the shipbuilding industry, aligning with President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump&#8217;s<\/a> push to revamp U.S. shipbuilding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. shipbuilding industry has lagged in comparison to near-peer adversaries like China, but the Labor Department\u2019s new effort seeks to close that gap by creating a program that supports &#8220;cutting-edge training programs&#8221; crafted in conjunction with U.S. allies to learn shipbuilding trades, according to the Labor Department.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A total of $8 million in funding will go toward Delaware County Community College, which will partner with Hanwa Philly Shipyard and South Korea, and $5.8 million will go toward the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, which will partner with Finland and Bollinger Shipyards, to offer advanced shipbuilding skill training to U.S. workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the initiative aims to establish a specialized, internationally recognized trade curriculum in an attempt to increase apprenticeship programs in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/congress-unveils-900b-defense-bill-targeting-china-tech-bans-investment-crackdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CONGRESS UNVEILS $900B DEFENSE BILL TARGETING CHINA WITH TECH BANS, INVESTMENT CRACKDOWN, US TROOP PAY RAISE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Restoring America\u2019s maritime dominance can\u2019t be accomplished without skilled American workers,&#8221; Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer said in a Tuesday statement to Fox News Digital. &#8220;In line with President Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/executive-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive orders<\/a>, these projects will help train our next generation of shipbuilders and ensure the skills critical to revitalizing our shipbuilding industry are developed here at home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. is massively behind near-peer competitors like China when it comes to shipbuilding, as well as allies like South Korea and Japan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>China is responsible for more than 50% of global shipbuilding, while South Korea is responsible for nearly 29% and Japan 13%, while the rest of the world accounts for roughly 4.4%, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Overall, the U.S. is responsible for just 0.1% of global shipbuilding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-unveils-golden-fleet-navy-battleships-touts-them-more-powerful-than-any-ship-ever-built\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TRUMP UNVEILS \u2018GOLDEN FLEET\u2019 OF NAVY BATTLESHIPS, TOUTS THEM AS \u2018MORE POWERFUL THAN ANY SHIP EVER BUILT&#8217;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The erosion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/military\/navy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. and allied shipbuilding capabilities<\/a> poses an urgent threat to military readiness, reduces economic opportunities, and contributes to China\u2019s global power-projection ambitions,&#8221; the Center for Strategic and International Studies said in a March report.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Finnish firms design roughly 80% of icebreakers globally, and Finnish shipyards build more than 60% of icebreakers, according to the Wilson Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump told lawmakers in March that he would &#8220;resurrect&#8221; both commercial and military shipbuilding, and signed an executive order in April seeking to reinvigorate the U.S. shipbuilding sector.<\/p>\n<p>That executive order called for assessments of how the government could enhance financial support through the Defense Production Act, the Department of Defense Office of Strategic Capital, a new Maritime Security Trust Fund, investment from shipbuilders from allied countries, and other grant programs.<\/p>\n<p>It also ordered agencies to craft a maritime action plan, and instructed the U.S. trade representative to create a list of recommendations to tackle China\u2019s &#8220;anticompetitive actions within the shipbuilding industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/labor-dept-launches-multimillion-dollar-shipbuilding-training-plan-us-races-close-china-gap\">Source &#8211; https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/labor-dept-launches-multimillion-dollar-shipbuilding-training-plan-us-races-close-china-gap <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FIRST ON FOX: The Labor Department is distributing nearly $14 million to U.S. institutions as part of a new initiative to train American workers to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"twitter_2902945987_2902945987":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[16563],"tags":[],"stock_ticker":[],"class_list":["post-116285","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-market-news","entry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
