A University of Alabama<\/a> student reportedly suffered multiple skull fractures and other injuries after he fell while on vacation with his family in the Caribbean.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe page set up for Matthew Polaski and his family reads, “What should have been a joyful time together quickly became every parent\u2019s worst nightmare.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Mike, Steph, Matthew, and Evan were on a family vacation in the Dominican Republic during the holidays while Matthew was home on winter break from his\u00a0freshman\u00a0year at the University of Alabama,” the GoFundMe page added. \u00a0<\/p>\n

“On December 28th, Matthew suffered a severe head injury after a fall. He was rushed to a local hospital where doctors performed emergency surgery<\/a> to relieve swelling on his brain and save his life. He\u00a0remains\u00a0in critical care and was placed in a medically induced coma,” it continued. “Once stabilized, Matthew was transported by\u00a0international\u00a0medical flight to Miami, where his treatment continues.”<\/p>\n

The circumstances of the fall were not immediately clear. Fox News Digital also has reached out to the University of Alabama for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The GoFundMe describes Polaski as a “hardworking, respectful young man with a deep passion for gymnastics.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“He recently began his college journey\u00a0at\u00a0Alabama, joined Sigma\u00a0Pi\u00a0fraternity, and has his whole future ahead of him. Mike and Steph have always been unwavering in their support \u2014 traveling to\u00a0countless meets, tournaments, and college visits to help Matthew pursue his dreams,” it added.<\/p>\n

An update posted Wednesday on the GoFundMe page described how Matthew Polaski suffered “skull fractures, fractured\u00a0pelvis\u00a0and lower back vertebrate fractures.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“They reduced sedation and checked motor\u00a0responses,\u00a0both arms and legs responded on chest stimulation, another good early sign. Much is still being\u00a0determined\u00a0with\u00a0mostly with\u00a0the head injury for unknowns,” the update added. “Probably the\u00a0most emotional update as a parent, Matthew started\u00a0motion\u00a0on his own, opened his mouth, and squeezed Steph\u2019s hand in responses. I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0imagine how many tears Steph had in that moment.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Robbinsville Police Department in New Jersey<\/a> said Matthew\u2019s father used to be its chief.<\/p>\n

The GoFundMe page said Matthew Polaski\u2019s medical bills in the Dominican Republic have reached nearly $75,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“International medical transport\u00a0costs alone\u00a0are estimated between $35,000 and $55,000. Unfortunately, insurance provides\u00a0very limited\u00a0coverage for international medical care, and even with insurance, medical expenses in the U.S. add up quickly. This is only the beginning,” it said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
