As tensions increase between Thailand and Cambodia, the United States government is warning Americans about traveling to the border area of the two countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The U.S. Embassy in Thailand issued a security alert<\/a> to American tourists on Dec. 16, warning of an “escalation of armed conflict” at the popular Asian destination.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“U.S. citizens should avoid all travel within\u00a050 kilometers [about 31 miles] of the Thailand-Cambodia\u00a0border,\u00a0due to active hostilities and the unpredictable security situation,” the alert said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Conditions on both sides “remain volatile,” it went on \u2014 and it is an “unpredictable security situation.”<\/p>\n

Tourists already in the area<\/a> are advised to follow instructions from Thai security services, as the U.S. government has “limited ability to provide emergency services.”<\/p>\n

Fighting broke out between<\/a> the two countries on Dec. 7, with both countries battling over a long-disputed border.<\/p>\n

Over a dozen people on both sides of the border have been killed to date due to the fighting, with over a half million displaced, The Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n

The territorial dispute<\/a> dates back to a long history of kingdom rivalry.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Modern-day disputes have centered on French colonial-era border maps \u2014 which Thailand denies.<\/p>\n

Thailand and Cambodia share several border towns and crossings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The most popular for travel<\/a> and trade is Aranyaprathet <\/strong>on the Thai side, with Poipet most popular in Cambodia.<\/p>\n

The HBO hit miniseries “White Lotus”<\/a> has persuaded many travelers to visit Thailand, with its scenic beaches and tranquil rainforests highlighted in season 3 of the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over 24 million international tourists visited Thailand<\/a> from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30 of this year, according to the country\u2019s Ministry of Tourism & Sports.<\/p>\n

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have persisted despite an October ceasefire negotiated by President Donald Trump<\/u><\/a>, which brought an end to five days of fighting in July. That fighting led to the death of dozens of soldiers and civilians.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The agreement showed signs of strain last month when several Thai soldiers were injured by land mines in contested areas \u2014 leading the Thai government to announce it would suspend implementation of parts of the deal.<\/p>\n
