For Matthew McConaughey<\/a>, the moment he learned he would become a father was everything he had dreamed of, but when he shared the news with his mother, things took an unexpected turn.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I always knew I wanted to be a father,” he said on “This Past Weekend with Theo Von,”<\/a> adding that the real challenge was finding “a woman that you\u2019re in love with and that you know is going to be a great mother.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

When he met Camila Alves, he found exactly that \u2014 but marriage wasn\u2019t the immediate next step.<\/p>\n

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY SWEARS QUEEN-SIZE BED HELPED MARRIAGE OF 13 YEARS<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

“Maybe that\u2019s because my mom and dad were married three times and divorced twice, and her mom and dad were married two times and divorced three times \u2026 we had a track record for reason to go, \u2018Well, I don\u2019t know about this.\u2019”\u00a0<\/p>\n

McConaughey said the two were thriving as a couple<\/a> and weren\u2019t interested in tying the knot just because others insisted they should.<\/p>\n

“So, we\u2019re rolling along \u2026 it\u2019s going great, and we don\u2019t want to get married<\/a> because that’s just what you\u2019re \u2018supposed\u2019 to do,” he said. “I don\u2019t want to back into it because someone said, \u2018Legally, it’s \u2026’, no, bulls—, I want to want to. I wasn\u2019t against it, but we were like, \u2018We\u2019re doing good.\u2019”<\/p>\n

Everything changed one night when McConaughey came home to a scene he didn\u2019t realize was setting up a life-changing reveal \u2014 cheeseburgers on the grill, his favorite tequila poured and a gift.<\/p>\n

He opened the gift and found a sonogram. They cried “tears of joy” together, then they decided to call his mother to share the good news.<\/p>\n

The moment he told her that they were expecting, the line fell silent.<\/p>\n

“Crickets,” he recalled. “Next thing you hear is, \u2018No, no, no, no, no, Matthew! This is out of order! I didn\u2019t raise you to do this. No, Matthew, you\u2019re supposed to be married<\/a>!\u2019 And went on and on and on in a five-minute monologue and then hung up.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ten minutes later, McConaughey\u2019s phone rang again. His mother had called back and asked him to put her on speakerphone so she could speak to both him and Alves.<\/p>\n

“\u2018I would like to put some white-out over that last \u2026 I was being selfish, thinking about myself,\u2019” she told them. “\u2018If you two are happy about it, I should be happy for you. It was not my place to be unhappy.\u2019”<\/p>\n

McConaughey said that moment helped reset everything, and he and Alves continued building their family.<\/p>\n

“So, we had two children before we got married,” he said, emphasizing that the journey unfolded exactly as it was meant to for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McConaughey and Alves married in 2012. Shortly after their wedding, the family moved from California to Texas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The couple share three children: Levi, Vida and Livingston.<\/p>\n
