Brendan Fraser<\/a> is reflecting on the cultural differences he noticed between Japan and the United States.<\/p>\n

After spending four months living and working overseas, the Oscar<\/a> winner shared a candid \u2014 and often lighthearted \u2014 take on American culture.<\/p>\n

During his appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,”<\/a> the host asked the actor, “How was your reintroduction to American culture?”<\/p>\n

\u2018THE WHALE\u2019 STAR BRENDAN FRASER REFLECTS ON EMOTIONAL HOLLYWOOD COMEBACK: \u2018I JUST BROKE OUT CRYING\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Fraser responded with a laugh, “I got back and I went, \u2018We\u2019re doing it wrong.\u2019”<\/p>\n

He followed up by adding, “We don\u2019t know how to eat \u2026 public transport \u2026 we don\u2019t have no jetpacks yet. I think we could work on our manners a little bit more.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0The audience laughed and applauded throughout his remarks.<\/p>\n

Fraser continued joking that America could take a page \u2014 or several \u2014 from Japan\u2019s playbook.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He pointed to some of the differences he observed in day-to-day interactions, noting, “It\u2019s anathema to a Japanese person to burden someone else with their troubles \u2026 and also saying \u2018no\u2019 to someone is a real circuitous sort of \u2018maybe not today,\u2019 or \u2018perhaps we should try something else.\u2019”<\/p>\n

His comments come as he promotes his latest film<\/a>, “Rental Family,” in which he plays an American actor embedded in Japan\u2019s “rental family” industry \u2014 a real-world service where people can hire stand-ins for emotional or social needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The role immersed Fraser deeply in Japanese daily life and etiquette.<\/p>\n

“The Whale” star has described living in Tokyo as both “eye-opening” and transformative.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a separate interview, he explained that the project allowed him to explore new territory as both an actor and a visitor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I love the aspect of making discoveries,” Fraser told People<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That sense of discovery extended to his character, Phillip Vandarploeug, and his own time overseas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fraser said he arrived early in Japan to absorb the culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I took the time to come in early enough to feel like I had my own Tokyo story to tell,” he shared.<\/p>\n

He added that exploring the city on foot helped him connect more deeply with the experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I spent enough time wandering the streets with my pocket translator trying to talk to anybody,” he recalled.<\/p>\n

The firsthand immersion, he said, “was one of the most eye-opening experiences I\u2019ve had in my career.”<\/p>\n
