Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., called out her fellow Democrats on Monday for “subverting democracy” with cynical political moves, warning one does not save democracy by bypassing it.<\/p>\n

Gluesenkamp Perez caused political shockwaves on Wednesday by demanding a vote to condemn Rep. Jes\u00fas “Chuy” Garc\u00eda, D-Ill., for unexpectedly\u00a0ending his re-election bid<\/a>,\u00a0which effectively cleared the way for his chief of staff to run in his place.<\/p>\n

CNN host Jake Tapper recalled Gluesenkamp Perez\u2019s accusation that Garcia\u2019s move was “undermining the process of a free and fair election,” noting that it is rare for a Democrat to turn against a party ally<\/a> in such a way.<\/p>\n

Gluesenkamp Perez said that she felt the need to speak up.<\/p>\n

“Because I believe election\u00a0subversion is wrong no matter\u00a0who\u2019s doing it,” she said. “And I think\u00a0that right now we\u2019re seeing a\u00a0profound, very loud call from\u00a0Americans for transparency and\u00a0accountability. And it\u2019s part\u00a0and parcel of that, that you\u00a0don\u2019t just turn a blind eye to\u00a0wrongdoing or unethical behavior\u00a0when it\u2019s, you know, politically\u00a0convenient, that you do it\u00a0consistently.”<\/p>\n

The moderate Democrat noted that not only was she dismayed at Garcia\u2019s allegedly tactical political move, but that her fellow Democrats applauded it<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“One of the disturbing things is that like, immediately after the news broke about how Chuy had basically chosen his successor, I saw a lot of members congratulating him on how clever and slick it was,” she said. “And I think that galvanized\u00a0me more to say that this is not\u00a0something to be proud of, or to\u00a0emulate or copy.”<\/p>\n

She warned that democracy cannot be saved by circumventing it.<\/p>\n

“What use is it to win an election at all costs, even your own integrity, if you are in that process, destroying Americans\u2019 confidence in government? That\u2019s the thing. Like, it\u2019s not a prize that\u2019s worth winning. If you destroy the thing in the process.”<\/p>\n

“Without question, what Congressman Garcia did stinks,” Tapper agreed. “And the voters got screwed without, you know, taking a position on what kind of a politician he is, or his successor, will be. You are right on the facts.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

He went on to ask whether the events of the previous election, such as the Democratic Party protecting Biden from primary challengers and then appointing Harris as his successor without a vote, influenced her decision.<\/p>\n

“Yeah. I think there\u2019s one school of thought that\u2019s pretty strong in D.C. That it\u2019s like, \u2018The threat to democracy is so real that we have to make choices for people, that Americans aren\u2018t smart enough to choose their own representatives.\u2019 I think that that lack of confidence in voters it is toxic, and it\u2019s not true,” she said.<\/p>\n

Gluesenkamp Perez, who identifies as Latina herself, was also asked about a recent accusation that she targeted Garcia because he is Latino and progressive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Identity politics do not justify election subversion,” she said. “Nothing justifies that. If you say that it\u2019s wrong, you have to say that it\u2019s wrong consistently. No matter who\u2019s doing it. This cannot be like a interparty fight. Like that\u2019s not what this is about. You know, it is about confidence of whether we are going to choose to respect voters, whether we\u2019re going to operate with morality.”<\/p>\n

When asked about her initial call to condemn Garcia from the House floor last week, a Garc\u00eda spokesperson said the congressman followed all proper election guidelines when making “a deeply personal decision based on his health, his wife\u2019s worsening condition and his responsibility to the grandchildren he is raising after the death of his daughter.”<\/p>\n

“At a moment like this, he hopes his colleagues, especially those who speak about family values, can show the same compassion and respect that any family would want during a health crisis<\/u><\/a>,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

His team did not immediately respond to a follow-up request for comment on Gluesenkamp Perez\u2019s latest remarks.<\/p>\n
