Monday marks\u00a0the\u00a050th\u00a0anniversary\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0sinking\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0SS\u00a0Edmund\u00a0Fitzgerald<\/a>, a\u00a0tragedy\u00a0on Lake Superior that claimed\u00a0the\u00a0lives\u00a0of\u00a029 men. In\u00a0the\u00a0days following\u00a0the\u00a0calamity, songwriter Gordon Lightfoot read about it in Newsweek\u00a0and\u00a0immediately put his God-given gifts to\u00a0their highest\u00a0and\u00a0best use.<\/p>\n

“The\u00a0Wreck\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Edmund\u00a0Fitzgerald,” as\u00a0the\u00a0maritime disaster will forever be known, was Lightfoot\u2019s Homeric ode to\u00a0the\u00a0courage<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0American freighter\u2019s crew on\u00a0their\u00a0final, fateful voyage.\u00a0The\u00a0song was released in August 1976, less than a year after\u00a0the\u00a0shipwreck.<\/p>\n

Lightfoot was on top\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0music game when\u00a0the\u00a0Fitz, as “the\u00a0pride\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0American side” was affectionately called, was loaded with 26,000 tons\u00a0of\u00a0iron ore. “Sundown” had reached No. 1 on\u00a0the\u00a0Billboard 200 albums chart in June 1974, featuring commercial hits like\u00a0the\u00a0title song\u00a0and\u00a0“Carefree Highway.” Gord, in other words, was gold.<\/p>\n

Yet in composing this song,\u00a0the\u00a0Canadian troubadour<\/a> did not set out to write another hit. Had that been his intention, he surely would not have written a dirge, let alone one that is over six minutes long\u00a0and\u00a0lacks a chorus. Moved by empathy, Lightfoot wanted to honor\u00a0the\u00a0valorous dead in a befitting way.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u2019d found\u00a0the\u00a0Newsweek article from which he learned about\u00a0the\u00a0wreck\u00a0to be insufficiently panegyrical,\u00a0and\u00a0so he did what true artists do: He created\u00a0the\u00a0beauty\u00a0that he longed to hear. Over 6,000 ships have gone down in\u00a0the\u00a0Great Lakes. We sing\u00a0of\u00a0this one even today because Lightfoot so sublimely immortalized it.<\/p>\n

Of\u00a0course, “The\u00a0Wreck\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Edmund\u00a0Fitzgerald” did become a hit after all, reaching No. 1 in Canada\u00a0and\u00a0No. 2 in\u00a0the\u00a0Billboard Hot 100 in\u00a0the\u00a0U.S. It is also perhaps Lightfoot\u2019s best-known song\u00a0and\u00a0was a lifetime achievement\u00a0of\u00a0singular importance to him. I believe this is no accident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In “Mere Christianity<\/a>,” C.S. Lewis wrote “Aim at Heaven\u00a0and\u00a0you will get earth \u2018thrown in\u2019: aim at earth\u00a0and\u00a0you will get neither.” Seek\u00a0the\u00a0higher\u00a0and\u00a0you get\u00a0the\u00a0lower: Lightfoot did precisely this. He concerned himself not with creating a hit but with creating\u00a0beauty. Hit status simply was thrown in.<\/p>\n

Once\u00a0the\u00a0Edmund\u00a0Fitzgerald\u2019s sinking was confirmed,\u00a0the\u00a0rector at Mariners\u2019 Church in Detroit<\/a> rang its bell 29 times to honor\u00a0the\u00a0life\u00a0of\u00a0each member\u00a0of\u00a0her crew.\u00a0Of\u00a0this mournful\u00a0and\u00a0lonely labor, Lightfoot elegiacally sang “the\u00a0church bell chimed \u2018till it rang 29 times” in his ballad.<\/p>\n

This lyrical salute was not forgotten<\/a> by\u00a0the\u00a0stalwart Anglican congregation. Every anniversary, Mariners\u2019 Church rings its bell 29 as a memorial to\u00a0the\u00a0crew. After Lightfoot\u2019s death in May 2023,\u00a0the\u00a0bell was rung a 30th\u00a0time,\u00a0the\u00a0last peal to honor\u00a0the\u00a0songwriter who used his gifts to ensure\u00a0their fathers, sons, brothers\u00a0and\u00a0husbands would never be forgotten.<\/p>\n

It was a beautiful gesture. That\u2019s another reason to create\u00a0beauty\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0world with\u00a0the\u00a0purity that Gordon Lightfoot did. It\u2019s contagious.<\/p>\n
