Democrats\u00a0are\u00a0holding\u00a0the\u00a0government\u00a0hostage<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0an extended\u00a0government shutdown\u00a0over\u00a0temporary, COVID-era\u00a0Affordable Care\u00a0Act (ACA) subsidies that were meant to make health insurance cheaper \u2013 or free \u2013 for millions of\u00a0Americans during the pandemic. But like most pandemic relics, the cost of these subsidies far outweighs\u00a0any potential benefits.<\/p>\n

Rather than forcing\u00a0an extension of the temporary, bumped-up subsidies through the spending bill, policymakers should\u00a0allow them to expire\u00a0at the end of the year\u00a0and focus instead on healthcare reforms that\u00a0actually help patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Democrats, including\u00a0Joe Biden, inflated COVID-era\u00a0ACA subsidies<\/a> were\u00a0always meant to be\u00a0a\u00a0temporary “economic bridge through the crisis,”\u00a0not\u00a0a\u00a0permanent expansion of\u00a0government. But\u00a0now, Democrats\u00a0are claiming that returning to pre-COVID Obamacare would be\u00a0a\u00a0catastrophe \u2013\u00a0a\u00a0not-so-tacit\u00a0admission that the health insurance scheme they\u2019ve lauded the past\u00a015 years is\u00a0no\u00a0good.\u00a0And it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

As mothers managing healthcare for our families, we\u2019ve lived the healthcare\u00a0system\u2019s failures. When Mary Katharine was seven months pregnant\u00a0and her husband tragically passed\u00a0away, she was informed that she\u2019d lost her third or fourth health insurance plan since the\u00a0ACA passed, leaving her with\u00a0a\u00a0costly, ineffective plan, despite the Obamacare promise that she could keep her insurance if she liked it.<\/p>\n

NOW IS THE TIME TO NUKE THE FILIBUSTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

To make the\u00a0already broken\u00a0ACA\u00a0system\u00a0worse, Biden\u2019s emergency measure increased the dollar\u00a0amount of\u00a0ACA subsidies\u00a0and expanded the number of people eligible for taxpayer support. Rather than helping the needy, these subsidies go straight to insurance companies \u2013 padding their profits\u00a0at the expense of\u00a0American taxpayers\u00a0and creating\u00a0a\u00a0breeding ground for enrollment fraud\u00a0and\u00a0abuse<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The subsidies,\u00a0along with weakened income verification, have led to skyrocketing improper enrollments.\u00a0According to the\u00a0Paragon Institute, more than 6.4 million people were improperly enrolled in 2025, costing taxpayers $27 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Zero-claim enrollees, people who\u00a0are enrolled but have never filed\u00a0a\u00a0claim, have\u00a0also skyrocketed, signaling\u00a0widespread fraud. Forty percent of those enrolled in fully subsidized plans filed zero claims, compared to the typical\u00a015% of zero-claim enrollees in private plans.<\/p>\n

And because\u00a0ACA subsidies\u00a0are based on current income with\u00a0no\u00a0consideration of\u00a0assets, even wealthy people can claim full subsidies\u00a0and get free coverage.\u00a0A\u00a0couple with $1.5 million in investable\u00a0assets who retired\u00a0at 46 to travel the world bragged on\u00a0Reddit\u00a0that they\u00a0are getting the maximum\u00a0ACA subsidy while “on\u00a0a\u00a05-month slow travel tour of the British Isles\u00a0and Ireland,\u00a0a\u00a0dream trip.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

PEOPLE TALK ABOUT LOWERING HEALTHCARE COSTS, BUT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS DOING IT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Dream for them. Nightmare for taxpayers\u00a0and the vulnerable\u00a0Americans whose coverage\u00a0and care is diluted by those\u00a0abusing the\u00a0system.<\/p>\n

Republicans in Congress<\/a>\u00a0and the White House\u00a0are rightly\u00a0identifying\u00a0the\u00a0American people\u2019s outrage\u00a0at handing bumped-up subsidies to bloated insurance companies, when cost-effective, patient-centered healthcare solutions exist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Contrary to misleading polls by the\u00a0Kaiser Family Foundation\u00a0and the\u00a0Washington Post,\u00a0a\u00a0recent poll\u00a0from\u00a0Americans for Prosperity found that, when voters were given\u00a0a\u00a0neutral description of the subsidies\u00a0and the two\u00a0alternatives \u2013 extend the bumped-up subsidies or return to the pre-COVID subsidies \u2013 38% favored letting them expire, 30% wanted them extended,\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0third were undecided.<\/p>\n

The poll\u00a0also found that 66% of\u00a0American voters \u2013 including 27% of Democrats \u2013 would rather Congress expand free market options like healthcare savings\u00a0accounts\u00a0and direct primary care\u00a0over\u00a0renewing the expiring subsidies (17%).\u00a0<\/p>\n

These free-market solutions show great promise in reducing healthcare costs<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0allowing for more personalized care.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For instance, with direct primary care, doctors operate on\u00a0a\u00a0monthly retainer rather than insurance coverage,\u00a0a\u00a0Netflix-style subscription model that reduces red tape\u00a0and paperwork, leaving more time for the doctor-patient interaction.<\/p>\n

Removing barriers such\u00a0as telehealth restrictions\u00a0and certificate of need laws that require state permission to open\u00a0a\u00a0hospital would\u00a0also lower costs\u00a0and increase\u00a0access.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And HSAs \u2013 tax-advantaged savings\u00a0accounts that\u00a0allow individuals to save\u00a0and pay for qualified medical expenses \u2013 give patients more choice\u00a0and control\u00a0over\u00a0their medical decisions. We\u2019ve seen HSA benefits firsthand. Lauren uses\u00a0an HSA to get faster, higher-quality care by\u00a0avoiding insurance paperwork\u00a0and network\u00a0approvals. We\u2019re encouraged that\u00a0access to these plans is expanding to\u00a0an\u00a0additional\u00a01.6 million\u00a0Americans in 2026, thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts legislation. But there is more to be done.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0government shutdown<\/a> should serve\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0wakeup call to buck the status quo\u00a0and bring better healthcare options to families. With fraud, waste\u00a0and ballooning costs undermining the current\u00a0system, it\u2019s time to shift toward solutions that put patients,\u00a0not bureaucrats or insurers, in control.<\/p>\n
