Late-night host Stephen Colbert<\/a> responded to the notion that his show was canceled by CBS for political reasons and said they were “reasonable,” but that it wasn’t his own reaction to the decision.<\/p>\n

GQ’s Zach Baron asked Colbert to respond to Democratic lawmakers such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Sen. Adam Schiff<\/a>, D-Calif., who have both wanted to find out if his show was canceled for political reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n

CBS announced in July<\/a> that it would be canceling “The Late Show” and that Colbert’s program would end in May 2026. CBS has said it was a purely financial decision.<\/p>\n

“I mean, that\u2019s not my job. That\u2019s not my reaction to it. My reaction as a professional in show business is to go: That is the network\u2019s decision,” Colbert responded<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I can understand why people would have that reaction because CBS or the parent corporation \u2014 I\u2019m not going to say who made that decision, because I don\u2019t know; no one\u2019s ever going to tell us \u2014 decided to cut a check for $16 million to the president of the United States over a lawsuit that their own lawyers, Paramount\u2019s own lawyers, said is completely without merit. And it is self-evident that that is damaging to the reputation of the network, the corporation, and the news division,” he said.<\/p>\n

He said theories associated with the settlement and his employment were “reasonable” to think.<\/p>\n

“But my side of the street is clean, and I have no interest in picking up a broom or adding to refuse on the other side of the street. Not my problem. So people can have their theories. I have my feelings about not doing the show anymore, but you\u2019d have to show me why that\u2019s a fruitful relationship for me to have with my network for the next nine months, for me to engage in that speculation,” Colbert continued.<\/p>\n

Colbert is a strong Democratic Party supporter and helped fundraise<\/a> for former President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n

The news of Colbert’s cancellation came two days after CBS News settled with President Donald Trump<\/a> in his lawsuit for $16 million against the network over their handling of a “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n

Colbert weighed in on the lawsuit during his show, and accused his employer of offering a “big fat bribe”<\/a> to the president.<\/p>\n

The late-night host explained in the GQ interview that CBS did not call him to inform him that his show was going to end in May.<\/p>\n

“My manager<\/a> told me,” he told the magazine. “They told him, and he told me.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
