For decades,\u00a0the\u00a0United States has fought\u00a0the\u00a0war on drugs<\/a> as if it were exclusively a law enforcement\u00a0issue. It never was. It has always had national security implications.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After years\u00a0of\u00a0inaction, drugs now kill more Americans each year than every modern war combined. Fentanyl alone claimed\u00a0more than 100,000 lives\u00a0in 2021, a number that continues to rise despite billions spent on interdiction, prevention and policing. That\u00a0is\u00a0not a criminal nuisance. That\u00a0is\u00a0a sustained mass-casualty event inside\u00a0the\u00a0homeland.<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s new approach finally treats\u00a0the\u00a0crisis for what it\u00a0is. By\u00a0designating major drug\u00a0cartels\u00a0as foreign terrorist organizations and authorizing\u00a0the\u00a0use\u00a0of\u00a0military\u00a0force\u00a0against\u00a0them, his administration has drawn a clear line between criminality and warfare.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0cartels\u00a0are not ordinary traffickers.\u00a0They are transnational powers that control territory, wield military-grade arsenals and\u00a0use\u00a0terror as a tool\u00a0of\u00a0governance. In\u00a0Trump\u2019s words,\u00a0they are “the\u00a0ISIS\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Western Hemisphere.”<\/p>\n

TRUMP SENDS MILITARY AFTER THE CARTELS AND IT\u2019S LONG OVERDUE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The\u00a0numbers already justify\u00a0the\u00a0policy. In\u00a0the\u00a0first weeks\u00a0of\u00a0operations,\u00a0the\u00a0new Homeland Security Task\u00a0Force<\/a>\u00a0has arrested more than 3,200 gang and cartel members, seized 91 tons\u00a0of\u00a0narcotics and captured over 1,000 illegal weapons. Those seizures represent tens\u00a0of\u00a0thousands\u00a0of\u00a0American lives saved. Every boat stopped and every shipment intercepted means fewer overdose deaths, fewer funerals, and fewer communities shattered by addiction and violence.<\/p>\n

For too long, Washington treated\u00a0the\u00a0cartels\u00a0as criminals who could be prosecuted rather than enemies who had to be defeated. That approach failed.\u00a0The\u00a0cartels\u00a0wage war on America for profit.\u00a0They assassinate, extort and kidnap while basking in riches captured through intimidation and terror.\u00a0\u00a0They destabilize our neighbors and corrupt governments from Mexico to Venezuela<\/a>. If America had\u00a0the\u00a0right to strike al Qaeda and\u00a0ISIS abroad for killing Americans, it has an equal right to strike\u00a0the\u00a0cartels\u00a0that kill Americans at home.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0legal foundation\u00a0is\u00a0clear. In February 2025,\u00a0the\u00a0State Department designated Tren de Aragua, Sinaloa, Jalisco Nueva Generaci\u00f3n, MS-13 and others as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. A presidential determination in September formally declared that\u00a0the\u00a0United States\u00a0is\u00a0in a non-international armed conflict with\u00a0these groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n

No court has challenged\u00a0the\u00a0policy because it aligns with both domestic and international law. When foreign networks deliberately kill American citizens,\u00a0the\u00a0president has not only\u00a0the\u00a0authority but\u00a0the\u00a0obligation to act.<\/p>\n

TEDDY ROOSEVELT’S POWERFUL LESSONS \u2013 STRENGTH, DUTY, COUNTRY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The\u00a0ethical case\u00a0is\u00a0equally strong.\u00a0The\u00a0Just War tradition requires a just cause, competent authority, proportionality and last resort. Every criterion has been met.\u00a0The\u00a0cause could not be more just when\u00a0drug overdoses\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0United States claimed more than 100,000 lives for a third consecutive year by 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Years\u00a0of\u00a0law enforcement, education campaigns and international coordination have not slowed\u00a0the\u00a0killing. When nonviolent means have failed,\u00a0the\u00a0duty\u00a0of\u00a0a government\u00a0is\u00a0to protect its citizens by every lawful means available.<\/p>\n

Each go-fast boat in\u00a0the\u00a0Caribbean<\/a> and each semi-submersible in\u00a0the\u00a0Pacific carries more than cocaine or methamphetamine. It carries a body count\u00a0of\u00a0Americans.\u00a0These are not fishing vessels.\u00a0They are militarized smuggling platforms crewed by combatants in a foreign network that profits from death. To treat\u00a0them as anything less\u00a0is\u00a0to deny reality.\u00a0The\u00a0era\u00a0of\u00a0denial\u00a0is\u00a0over.<\/p>\n

Critics argue that military strikes risk escalation.\u00a0The\u00a0cartels\u00a0crossed this line long ago when\u00a0they began murdering, intimidating and corrupting\u00a0their way into power.\u00a0These transnational criminal enterprises now operate as shadow governments. To continue treating\u00a0them as mere criminal syndicates would be absurd.\u00a0\u00a0In truth, it would be to accept defeat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

MEXICO BROKE INTERNATIONAL LAW WITH THE CARTELS AND AMERICANS SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s\u00a0use\u00a0of\u00a0force\u00a0is\u00a0not about vengeance. It\u00a0is\u00a0about national defense.\u00a0The\u00a0Department\u00a0of\u00a0War,\u00a0the\u00a0CIA,\u00a0the\u00a0intelligence community,\u00a0the\u00a0DEA, FBI and Coast Guard are now unified in a single mission to dismantle\u00a0the\u00a0cartels\u2019 capacity<\/a> to kill Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Every strike on a drug boat denies\u00a0the\u00a0enemy profit and saves lives. As Secretary Pete Hegseth<\/a> said, each destroyed vessel represents roughly\u00a025,000 Americans\u00a0who will not die from\u00a0the\u00a0poison it carried.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0cartels\u2019 economic reach rivals that\u00a0of\u00a0small nations, generating\u00a0hundreds\u00a0of\u00a0billions annually.\u00a0They corrupt\u00a0officials, weaponize migration and flood American streets with narcotics. This\u00a0is\u00a0not commerce. It\u00a0is\u00a0organized war for profit.<\/p>\n

A government that fails to confront such an enemy\u00a0is\u00a0unworthy\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0people it serves.\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0use\u00a0of\u00a0military\u00a0force\u00a0against\u00a0the\u00a0cartels\u00a0is\u00a0justified\u00a0both legally and morally. It\u00a0is\u00a0long overdue.\u00a0The\u00a0United States has every right to defend its borders<\/a>, its citizens and its sovereignty\u00a0against\u00a0a foreign network that profits from American death.<\/p>\n

For decades, America fought this war with hesitation and half-measures. Now it\u00a0is\u00a0being fought with purpose. This\u00a0is\u00a0not a new war. It\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0same one that has been killing Americans for generations<\/a>.\u00a0The\u00a0difference\u00a0is\u00a0that, at last, America\u00a0is\u00a0fighting to win.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
