Michael J. Fox is blasting “bully culture” and sharing his own experience with what he calls his biggest bully \u2014 Parkinson’s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For the 40th anniversary of “Back to the Future,” Fox and his co-stars \u2014 Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown) and Lea Thompson (Lorraine McFly) \u2014 sat down with Empire<\/a> to discuss the iconic sci-fi movie. Fox noted that, like in the film, bully culture remains alive and well.<\/p>\n

“We live in a bully culture right now. We have bullies everywhere \u2014 you don\u2019t need me to point the finger at who, but there are all these bullies,” Fox said.<\/p>\n

MICHAEL J. FOX ADMITS HE FELT \u2018LIKE A WHORE\u2019 WHILE FILMING ‘TEEN WOLF’<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

“In this movie, Biff is a bully. Time is a bully. For me personally, Parkinson\u2019s is a bully. And it\u2019s all about how you stand up to them and the resolve that you take into the fight with them. It\u2019s about your resilience and your courage,” he said.<\/p>\n

According to Fox, the movie still resonates with fans four decades later because of the seemingly impossible odds the characters overcome.<\/p>\n

“I think there\u2019s a lot to that right now. I think a lot of people are responding to the movie because it strikes chords they wouldn\u2019t otherwise recognize,” he said.<\/p>\n

For the past three decades, Fox hasn\u2019t let his “bully” win.<\/p>\n

The star is set to return to the screen after five years in retirement with his most personal role yet in the upcoming season of “Shrinking.”<\/p>\n

MICHAEL J. FOX DOESN’T WANT A ‘DRAMATIC’ DEATH AFTER BATTLING PARKINSON’S FOR 35 YEARS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

“I just feel I have to,” he told USA Today<\/a>. “It’s a tradeoff. I want to be around for everything.”<\/p>\n

“I want to be active at everything, keep working, keep my partnerships going, my good friends, and enjoy my time with my family,” he added. “And it’s all good; it’s so much better than it could be.”<\/p>\n

Parkinson\u2019s disease, a degenerative brain disorder that affects the nervous system and mobility, has been central to Fox\u2019s life since his diagnosis in 1991, according to the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n

Throughout much of his acting career, Fox has found ways to work around his symptoms. Now, he\u2019s landed his first role where he doesn\u2019t have to worry about the disease.<\/p>\n

In “Shrinking,” Fox’s character also has Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

“It was the first time ever I get to show up on-set, and I didn\u2019t have to worry about am I too tired or coughing or anything,” he told People<\/a>. “I just do it. It was really good, because for the moments when I say, \u2018I\u2019m not going to be able to do this,\u2019 then I say, \u2018Well, I\u2019ll just deal with how I can\u2019t do it in the scene.\u2019 And you get through it.”<\/p>\n

Fox\u2019s return to acting comes after a five-year hiatus that began with his 2020 retirement announcement. The “Family Ties” star opened up about his future with the \u2018mysterious\u2019 disease \u2014 which he was diagnosed with at age 29 \u2014 in an interview with The Times (U.K.)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s no timeline, there\u2019s no series of stages that you go through \u2013 not in the same way that you would, say, with prostate cancer. It\u2019s much more mysterious and enigmatic,” he explained.<\/p>\n

“There are not many people who have had Parkinson\u2019s for 35 years,” Fox continued. “I\u2019d like to just not wake up one day. That\u2019d be really cool. I don\u2019t want it to be dramatic. I don\u2019t want to trip over furniture, smash my head.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
