Dyan Cannon may have plenty of friends, but none with “benefits.”<\/p>\n

The actress caused a stir at the 10th annual Hollywood Beauty Awards in April when she seemingly revealed that, at age 88, she had “several friends with benefits.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cannon, who once dated Johnny Carson and was married to Cary Grant, is the co-host of a new podcast, “God\u2019s Table Hollywood,”<\/a> which features faith-based conversations about finding purpose.<\/p>\n

“I went to the red carpet and this really cool gal from People magazine<\/a> said, \u2018Can we interview you?\u2019” Cannon told Fox News Digital. “I said yes. And she said, \u2018Do you have a lot of friends in Hollywood?\u2019 And I said, \u2018I do. I have some nice friends.\u2019 And she said, \u2018Friends with benefits?\u2019 I said, \u2018Of course! And they benefit me in more than one way.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

“And she said, \u2018Well, how is that?\u2019 And I said, \u2018They keep coming. They just keep benefiting me in more than one way.\u2019 \u2018Oh, Ms. Cannon, thank you so much for this interview!\u2019 I thought, \u2018Well, OK.\u2019”<\/p>\n

It was only after Cannon\u2019s comments made headlines that she realized her mistake.<\/p>\n

“I did not know what that meant!” she said. “My friends said to me, \u2018Dyan, come on.\u2019 I said, \u2018No, my best friend didn\u2019t know what it meant. My brother didn\u2019t know what it meant.\u2019 \u2018Well, there\u2019s a movie [with Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake]<\/a>.\u2019 I said, \u2018I don\u2019t see all movies!\u2019 Friends with benefits? Friends are kind to me, friends . . . help me. That\u2019s what I meant by it.”<\/p>\n

“The next morning, my phone was blowing up,” Cannon recalled. “[It] was all over the world. I got some congratulatory notes. I received some messages from my Christian friends<\/a> that said, \u2018Oh, well, Dyan, that\u2019s not very nice of you.\u2019 I said, \u2018Guys, come on. I thought friends with benefits meant friends who benefit your life!\u2019 How do words get . . . How do things get so screwed up? So misunderstood.”<\/p>\n

At first, it was no laughing matter for Cannon, who was horrified by the unexpected attention she was getting.<\/p>\n

“It really upset me in the beginning because, oh my gosh, that kind of publicity I don\u2019t need,” she explained. “If that were the truth, why would I be telling People magazine about my sex life? There\u2019s no way. But . . . the congratulatory notes are what really turned me around.”<\/p>\n

“\u2019Good for you, Dyan!\u2019” she said, laughing. “I got credit for something that wasn\u2019t credible.”<\/p>\n

Cannon and Grant, who was 33 years her senior, were married from 1965 to 1968. They welcomed a daughter, Jennifer Grant, in 1966. The Oscar nominee later married lawyer-turned-real estate investor Stanley Fimberg from 1985 to 1991.<\/p>\n

Cannon stressed that having “friends with benefits”<\/a> isn’t her style due to her faith. What she hasn\u2019t ruled out, though, is a chance to meet one special someone. Just don\u2019t expect her to start swiping right anytime soon.<\/p>\n

“I was going to [try dating apps] and my girlfriend, who\u2019s very hip in the area, warned me about it,” said Cannon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“She said, \u2018No, don\u2019t do that.\u2019 But I know friends who have done it. They\u2019re married and have good marriages.<\/a> I haven\u2019t been led to do that because . . . I don\u2019t know. It scares me a little bit about motives. I haven\u2019t done it. But I have friends who have done it successfully. I have friends who have done it and have been bitten.”<\/p>\n

These days, Cannon is embracing the single life.<\/p>\n

“It took me a long time to learn how to be happy by myself because I really thought I was incomplete without a man in my life,” she admitted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I was raised to think that you marry, you have children and that\u2019s what makes a happy life. And in my case, it wasn\u2019t. But I\u2019ve learned how to be happy alone. There\u2019s great freedom in that because then you don\u2019t settle for the broken set of dishes. You\u2019re not with somebody just because you\u2019re lonely. You\u2019re not with someone just because you\u2019re afraid to be alone.”<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m absolutely open to dating,” Cannon continued. “There\u2019s no one in my life right now that I\u2019m dating, but I have two rescue puppies<\/a>, and they\u2019re great company, and I have wonderful friends. Should the right one come along, I think [that will be] a real blessing to have.”<\/p>\n

While Cannon is open to finding love again, she doesn\u2019t envision herself saying “I do” once more.<\/p>\n

“I was forced to give up my career in marriage,” she said. “And looking back, I don\u2019t think I would do that again. I would not want to trade one for the other. But I think it\u2019s possible when you\u2019re with somebody who really supports you and loves you to manage both.”<\/p>\n

“I think we all have to be true to . . . our highest sense of right, not listen so much to what the world says we should be doing. \u2026 When I am in line with that, I\u2019m fine. And when I go against that, I mess it up badly. \u2026 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d want to get married again, but I would love to be able to sit down with somebody and hold hands and talk about the things that are important in life. I like that idea.”<\/p>\n

Today, Cannon said she\u2019s finding happiness not with a new man, but by launching “God\u2019s Table Hollywood.” She\u2019s co-hosting alongside Emmy Award-winning actress Tracey Bregman, TV personality and journalist Kym Douglas-Robertson and chef Christine Avanti-Fischer.<\/p>\n

“The four of us were at dinner one night at the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills,” said Cannon. “One of the girls said, \u2018God\u2019s table.\u2019 And I said, \u2018In Hollywood?\u2019 And we said, \u2018That\u2019s a show \u2014 \u2018God\u2019s Table Hollywood.\u2019 It happened just like that.”<\/p>\n

“We know each other\u2019s views, and we don\u2019t always agree on everything, which I think makes for interesting conversation,” she said. “There are three very strong women, and I\u2019m just delighted to be a part of it.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
