Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., rejected accusations that he was caving to progressive pressure to force a government shutdown and said a deal could be made to keep the government open if the Republicans were willing to negotiate.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s up to them.\u00a0If they come into the meeting to\u00a0seriously negotiate \u2013 and the\u00a0reason we\u2019ve been pushing for\u00a0months, and we\u2019ve been resolute\u00a0that we need a meeting, that we\u00a0need a real negotiation \u2013 and you\u00a0don\u2019t do this by one party putting\u00a0together a completely partisan\u00a0bill and saying take it or leave\u00a0it,” Schumer told NBC\u2019s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Democrats and Republicans in Congress are at odds over a proposal to keep the government funded<\/a> through Nov. 21 that needs to be passed by Tuesday in order to prevent a shutdown. Democrats in the Senate are refusing to provide the necessary votes for passage unless they secure key concessions<\/a>, namely Affordable Care Act subsidies for low-and- middle-income Americans and reversing Republican Medicaid cuts passed in President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s “One Big Beautiful Bill.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Republicans have called those demands non-starters and urged Democrats to pass a clean funding bill.<\/p>\n

TRUMP TO MEET WITH TOP CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS AT WHITE HOUSE AS GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN LOOMS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Just before Schumer\u2019s interview, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told Welker that Democrats are “afraid of their base” and said Obamacare tax credits could be negotiated at the end of the year when they are set to expire. He urged Democrats to “release the hostage,” adding that he was open to talks about the tax credits later.<\/p>\n

“Rank-and-file Democrats are\u00a0getting nervous and Sen.\u00a0Schumer is too.\u00a0The far left has painted them\u00a0into an unsustainable corner, and\u00a0they know it.\u00a0Hopefully, Sen. Schumer sees\u00a0the light and listens to the\u00a0same voice that walked him and\u00a0his colleagues away from a shutdown in March. If a White House meeting helps them get there,\u00a0I welcome the opportunity,” Thune said Sunday.<\/p>\n

“Fundamentally, nothing has\u00a0changed, though, and the choice\u00a0remains the same.\u00a0Democrats can either vote for a\u00a0clean, short-term, nonpartisan\u00a0CR [continuing resolution] that prioritizes the American\u00a0people, or they can choose a\u00a0completely avoidable shutdown,” he added.<\/p>\n

TRUMP CANCELS MEETING WITH SCHUMER, JEFFRIES OVER ‘RIDICULOUS DEMANDS’ AS FUNDING DEADLINE LOOMS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Trump is scheduled to meet with Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., along with Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., at the White House Monday to discuss the funding measure. Trump was previously scheduled to meet with Democrats to discuss the funding measure, but canceled the meeting<\/a> on Tuesday, saying that the meeting could not be “productive.”<\/p>\n

“After reviewing the details of the unserious and ridiculous demands being made by the Minority Radical Left Democrats in return for their Votes to keep our thriving Country open, I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

Schumer and Jeffries released a joint statement Saturday saying they are willing to meet with the president but warned that time is running out.<\/p>\n
