President Donald Trump<\/a> had South Korea\u2019s new leftist\u00a0President Lee Jae-myung<\/a>\u00a0panicking after his Truth Social post a few hours before meeting in late August.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what Trump wrote: \u00a0<\/p>\n

“WHAT IS GOING ON IN SOUTH KOREA?<\/a> Seems like a Purge or Revolution. We can\u2019t have that and do business there. I am seeing the new President today at the White House. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!”\u00a0<\/p>\n

TRUMP ANNOUNCES MEETING WITH XI JINPING AT SOUTH KOREA APEC SUMMIT SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Trump was referring to the Lee administration\u2019s aggressive efforts to punish former President\u00a0Yoon Suk Yeol\u00a0and to intimidate conservative opponents, including religious groups. A South Korean government investigative raid on the jointly operated Osan Air Base was also on Trump\u2019s mind. \u00a0<\/p>\n

But then Trump eased up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Later, in a good-natured joint press conference with Lee, Trump said it might have just been a “misunderstanding” or “rumor.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Maybe the $350 billion in South Korean investment into the U.S. and buying another $100 billion of U.S. energy loosely agreed to in July had something to do with it. \u00a0<\/p>\n

But Trump squandered a golden opportunity to bolster the pro-U.S. constituency in South Korea and to put Lee on notice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lee probably couldn\u2019t believe his good fortune. He had avoided the Zelenskyy treatment\u00a0\u2014<\/a>\u00a0a dressing down in the White House\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and could go home saying the Americans approved of him and his administration. And this despite allegations of election fraud and Lee\u2019s heavy-handed treatment of opponents \u2014\u00a0and the apparent pro-North Korea,<\/a> pro-China and anti-American leanings of Lee and certain of his officials. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Lee could even quietly claim he tamed Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n

TRUMP CLAIMS PUTIN, XI, KIM ARE CONSPIRING AGAINST THE US AFTER MILITARY PARADE IN CHINA<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Has he reciprocated Trump\u2019s restraint? \u00a0<\/p>\n

Hardly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u2019s stepped on the gas\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and doesn\u2019t seem to care if Washington notices. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Lee is still targeting religious organizations and arresting pro-conservative religious leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n

TRUMP TOUTS KIM JONG UN RELATIONSHIP AMID SOUTH KOREA SUMMIT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

He continues to imprison the former president under harsh conditions, and has arrested and imprisoned Yoon\u2019s wife.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u2019s harassing opposition parties\u00a0\u2014\u00a0including police intimidation of citizens, especially those promoting electoral integrity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And as for the U.S.-South\u00a0Korea military alliance that Lee said was so important shortly after taking office\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Lee recently posted on social media:\u00a0<\/p>\n

“What is important is to reject the submissive mindset that national self-reliant defense is impossible without foreign troops.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

SOUTH KOREA TO END SOME MILITARY ACTIVITY ON BORDER TO EASE TENSIONS WITH NORTH KOREA\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

In other words \u2026 South Korea would be better off without U.S. troops around. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Lee had to know how it would be interpreted. Not least since he\u2019s already on record calling American forces “an occupation force.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

And his administration cracks down on anti-China protests while allowing anti-U.S. protesters to deface pictures of Trump while protesting in front of the American Embassy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lee has also just backpedaled on the promise to invest $350 billion in the U.S. \u2013 saying it will wreck the South Korean economy. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Why did the Trump administration back off instead calling out Lee\u2019s anti-democratic behavior? \u00a0<\/p>\n

Maybe lobbyists got to somebody close to Trump? Maybe he was following U.S. Embassy Seoul or State Department advice?\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.S. Embassy Seoul does sometimes act as if ROK leftists are the preferred South Korean administration. \u00a0<\/p>\n

And the State Department usually wants to deal with the government in power\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and try to ride out any rough patches.\u00a0<\/p>\n

NORTH KOREA BREAKS SILENCE ON TRUMP’S RETURN, SENDS MESSAGE FROM ‘ROCKET MAN’<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

In South Korea\u2019s case, it\u2019s thought the fundamental relationship is solid \u2014 forged in blood of the Korean War. And any leftists are just a noisy minority posing little danger. \u00a0<\/p>\n

And anyway, if Lee crosses some ill-defined line, Washington will act.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The problem is, Washington never does. \u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s always a reason not to act. Too busy with other things, it\u2019s provocative and will just make things worse.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With South Korea, there\u2019s too much focus on the military-to-military ties and the bilateral economic relationship. These are strong. But that doesn\u2019t matter much as hardcore radicals are trying to undercut the relationship and seize total power and shift South Korea away from the U.S. and toward China and North Korea.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Most Koreans don\u2019t want this, but ruthless radicals have moved a democratic, pro-U.S. country where most people don\u2019t want to go. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Recall Venezuela. Once democratic and America\u2019s strongest ally in Latin America, but now a dictatorship and America\u2019s biggest enemy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Clearer thinking is called for in the White House<\/a> when it comes to South Korea.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It appears\u00a0Lee Jae-myung\u00a0pulled a fast one on President Trump in the White House last month\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and perhaps figures he can do it again. \u00a0<\/p>\n

If he gets away with it, others will think they can too.\u00a0<\/p>\n
