For most of American history, having children was considered part of the dream: a family, a house, and the hope of building something better for the next\u00a0generation. But ask\u00a0Generation\u00a0Z<\/a>, and you\u2019ll hear a different story.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0At the dinner table the other evening, all three of my children in their 20s talked about the possibility of not having\u00a0kids\u00a0and\u00a0why.\u00a0It broke my heart. But, more young adults are saying, “I don\u2019t\u00a0want\u00a0kids.” And their reasons tell us something very important about where America is headed and the real financial realities of today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the Money, Plain and Simple<\/strong><\/p>\n

Raising\u00a0kids\u00a0has become brutally expensive<\/a> in this country. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates it now costs\u00a0over $300,000 to raise a child to age 18 \u2013 not counting college<\/a>, which can easily tack on another six figures.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the same time, the\u00a0median home price<\/a> has climbed above $411,000, making the dream of homeownership \u2013 a traditional foundation for starting a family \u2013 out of reach for many.<\/p>\n

AMERICA’S OBSESSION WITH POLITICIZING OUR CHILDREN HAS GOT TO STOP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Layer on\u00a0student loan debt averaging $37,000 per borrower, rising child care costs, and a shaky job market filled with gig and contract work, and it\u2019s no surprise that Gen\u00a0Z\u00a0feels priced out of parenthood.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Generation\u00a0Redefining Happiness<\/strong><\/p>\n

For past\u00a0generations, family and climbing the corporate ladder was the ultimate marker of success. Gen\u00a0Z\u00a0is rewriting the rules. Many value\u00a0personal freedom, career growth and travel\u00a0over traditional milestones like marriage and children. Happiness doesn\u2019t have to mean a spouse and two\u00a0kids\u00a0in the suburbs\u00a0anymore \u2013 it can mean financial independence, meaningful work<\/a> or even online communities.<\/p>\n

And then there\u2019s mental health. This\u00a0generation\u00a0reports\u00a0the highest levels of anxiety and depression<\/a>\u00a0of any living age group. For some, the idea of managing their own mental well-being is enough of a challenge, let alone taking on the responsibility of raising children.<\/p>\n

Gen\u00a0Z\u00a0is also the first\u00a0generation\u00a0to grow up with climate change drilled into their heads from childhood. Polls show\u00a0nearly 40% cite environmental concerns\u00a0as a reason to delay or avoid children altogether. Add in constant headlines about inflation, wars and pandemics, and many feel like the future is too unstable to responsibly bring a child into the world.<\/p>\n

The Gender Equation<\/strong><\/p>\n

For women, the calculation is even sharper. Despite decades of progress, women still shoulder most child care responsibilities. Many in Gen\u00a0Z\u00a0simply don\u2019t see motherhood as compatible with their career ambitions or the lifestyle they\u00a0want. With more opportunities than ever before for women in corporate American and entrepreneurial ventures, some women are unwilling to pay the price \u2013 in time, money and freedom \u2013 that comes with raising a child.<\/p>\n

The Bigger Problem for America<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the issue: America needs babies. In 1960, the average woman had 3.6 children. Today, it\u2019s just 1.6 \u2013 well below the replacement rate needed to sustain a healthy population. If these trends continue, we\u2019ll face shrinking tax bases, fewer workers to support Social Security and an aging population that strains the system.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t just a lifestyle choice by Gen\u00a0Z \u2013 it\u2019s a looming demographic crisis for the country.\u00a0 And a looming problem for Gen X parents hoping their\u00a0kids\u00a0will give them a bunch of grandchildren.<\/p>\n

As a financial advisor, I understand the hesitation.\u00a0As a parent, it\u2019s tough to swallow. Raising a family has never been more expensive or more uncertain. But if we\u00a0want\u00a0to preserve America\u2019s vitality, we must make family life more affordable<\/a> and attractive again \u2013 through lower housing costs, tackling inflation on day-to-day items and addressing the staggering price of child care in this country.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0Generation\u00a0Z\u00a0opts out of parenthood<\/a>, the personal choice of millions could shape the destiny of our nation. The question is no longer\u00a0why\u00a0they don\u2019t\u00a0want\u00a0kids \u2013 it\u2019s whether America can afford a future without them.<\/p>\n
